Journey of a Modern Mystic: A Life Long Practice

As with any adventure you embark on, as the adventure unfolds, you tend feel like nothing has changed because day to day, the shifts aren’t always obvious. Yet, often when we look back at who we were, where we were when we began, we can see the difference and the changes that have taken place. It’s a real before and after that is quantifiable, tangible. that can’t always be seen while we’re in it.

My journey through the School of the Modern Mystic has been subtle in many ways, especially with the day to day working on and working in the material but when I look back at who I was before hand, how I felt before hand I can see and feel that I am very different than I was before.

While many things have shifted, I feel perhaps the biggest gift this beautiful school has given me is the gift of knowing what my own energy feels like.

Before this training, I felt tired, unwell and agitated about so many things. Now, when I am continuing these practices, I find that I have more energy, when I’m unwell I am not unwell for long and while I find myself getting agitated here and there, I know I only need to return to my practices to feel a sense of stillness again. I know that these practices are integral for my wellbeing, for my self-esteem, for my life to feel smooth and life’s challenges something that can be overcome.

I am human of course and I often fall off of my Modern Mystic Wagon but the support from my fellow Modern Mytsics is always there to help get me back on track. It is after all, a spiritual practice.

Without these practices, I know that I am a short fused, illness prone, tired, grumpy person. With them, I am energetic, I am still, I am comfortable in who I am and I make smart choices without really needing to work through them. They just seem to be easy to make.

If I get my energy field right, everything else just works. And I can tell you that fist hand. I’ve loved it so much i’ve begun level 2 to deepen the work of level 1.

Self Development Not for the Faint Hearted

Self Development Quote Dana Atkin

Working on yourself can be HARD work. Especially when you’re fighting your ego the entire way and dragging yourself kicking and screaming towards change like a stubborn toddler throwing a tantrum.

It is not easy. It was never meant to be. We’re re-wiring our brain, our beliefs and our attitudes and that’s hard stuff sometimes. We’re wried for survival and survival is all about keeping the status quo. So when we try to change things, we become that stubborn toddler who wants just 5 more minutes at the park. Who wants an ice-cream and who refuses to eat his dinner because he doesn’t want the potato on the plate (even though we know full well we don’t have to eat it just because it’s there).

We’re in routine. But routine can be mundane and routine is never changing and ultimately, we as humans actually like variety and change. We just don’t like the process it takes to get there because it’s not an easy transition.

Knowing it’s worth it can help. So too does having faith that it will all come together, despite the evidence to the contrary. Self development is not for the faint hearted but it certainly is for those who seek change and are willing to do the real work to get there. Tantrums and all.

Journey of a Modern Mystic: A little time out

It occurred to me today that it’s been a while since my last post. This was not intentional at all but perhaps was needed.

You see, I’ve started a journey. It’s not entirely a new journey at all but it is definitely the first I have fully embraced as part of my energetically drawn self, my spiritual side, my intuitive side.

I’ve begun the Level 1 of Belinda Davidson’s School of The Modern Mystic (SoMM – see details and link below). While it was my intention to blog my way through this from go to whoa, I found myself holding on to this, just for me.

When I began studying Reiki and Tarot and Kinesiology, it was all about helping other people. Which of it’s self is a great thing, but when you do this at the expense of yourself and your own needs, it can get tiring, draining and very overwhelming. There are so many people to help!

So, when enrolled in SoMM, I decided that above all else, this course would be for me. Me first. I think that’s why I’ve found it so difficult to write a full post on the topic (I’ve got numerous drafts but nothing ever felt right to publish) because on some level, I needed it to be just for me. Perhaps at some point, I’ll be ready to share more of this journey with you all.

Right now, I find myself though compelled to share the fact that it’s okay to have something for yourself. Something that is for you. That’s not about healing the world, that’s not about taking care of everyone else, but simply about you holding space for you.

Yes, It’s easier said than done.

For me, I spend 35 minutes per day meditating (some days I don’t, some days I procrastinate which is just resistance but hey, I’m human). And then I spend a couple of hours on a Monday at the start of each SoMM module soaking in the course content and honouring each Chakra and each element as it arises. I give myself the gift of space and time to work on myself and the things that are important for me because without them, I don’t ever really feel like I’m 100% being my authentic self nor am I 100% present for all the other people and things in my life.

Start small. It can be as simple as 15 minutes you take out of your day to sit quietly and sip a cup of tea, just because you feel like it. It’s actually about honouring yourself and your needs and wants. Rather than running around the house thinking “argh, I have to get all this done before the kids get home” or feeling that being productive means getting things done and that’s more important. Sometimes, being productive means slowing down, taking a moment or 5 for yourself to centre back into being you again. If you feel good, you’ll get more stuff done anyway and you’re less likely to resent the things you have to do.

I officially give you permission to do something for yourself this week. Take a little time out for yourself, for YOU, for the fun of it, because you want to, because you deserve it and because above all, you are important too.

SoMM is the School of the Modern Mystic. It’s a self awareness, self love and spiritual practice. It’s a school where you learn first hand how your chakras work within yourself and your life. I can’t recommend it more highly. In fact, I’m also a proud affiliate because I love this course and what it’s meant for me and my life so far.
