Monday Mantra:: With Faith, All Things Are Possible

Monday-Mantra-Faith

As dream chaser, it’s so important not to lose faith even when it seems like all is lost, like that horizon is too far away, when it feels like it will never come together, it’s the perseverance to get through those times that empowers the dream, it drives it, it pulls it closer and it makes realising it all the more sweeter.

I’ve seen many clients recently who are feeling like all the work they’re putting in, just doesn’t feel like it’s getting anywhere. Yet, I can see a shift in their energy, I can see the transformation from the inside. They look lighter, more sparkly and their outlook has shifted, which means that it’s only a matter of time before the transformations are seen in their outer world.

Keep up the faith, invest in your “trust fund” and you’ll find the journey towards your dream so much more enjoyable.

Look for the Number 32
In Doreen Virtue’s Angel Numbers, when the number 32 show up often for you, especially when you notice it a number of times in one day means that you’re being told to keep the faith.

Notice songs, notice what people are saying (even when they don’t know what’s going on for you) they will often have a message there for you.

Remember, with faith all things are possible.

As always, download and save to your desktop or phone or print it and pin it somewhere you’ll see it. When you see it, say it. And if you know someone who would also benefit from this mantra, share it.

Monday Mantra:: It’s Safe for Me To Be Human

Monday-Mantra-being-human

Children have this knack of being themselves. When they’re happy, they are outwardly happy and joyous. When they’re sad, they cry. Somewhere between childhood and adulthood though, we’re taught to pretend that we’re okay, even if we’re not. We’re taught to be calm even when we’re happy.

Often as adults, we find ourselves in not so great circumstances and we push through, pretending that we’re fine when we’re not and thinking that we have to hold ourselves together that we can’t be unwell or we can’t be upset because people will think less of us. We go to work when we’re sick even though we know it’s important to look after ourselves, we get it in our mind that a business is more important, that something or someone outside ourselves is more important than us and our own wellbeing?!

The fact is that being vulnerable is actually okay. News flash: we’re all human. We’re not perfect because it’s in our nature to always be striving for more, so why deny ourselves of who we really are, our authentic selves? We’re all human. We laugh, we cry and sometimes we get sick and you know what, we don’t need to pretend we’re okay if we’re not, we can cry if we feel so inclined and we can certainly ask for help.

I hear this so often from clients:

“Is it silly that I feel scared to speak up?”
“Is it vain to want to look good?”
“Is it weird that I’m worried about what other people think?”

The lists go on but my answer is always the same – “No it’s not – you’re human, just like every other person on the planet so you’re not alone in this.”

Today, I want you to acknowledge your humanity and the humanity of those around you. Keep an eye out for those who seem to be keeping themselves, their true self at bay and encourage them to be themselves – lead by example.

As always, download and save to your desktop or phone or print it and pin it somewhere you’ll see it. When you see it, say it. And if you know someone who would also benefit from this mantra, share it.

Sleep Well

3000MelbMag Sleep Well Dana Atkin April 2014

Frustrating isn’t it? When you can’t sleep. You’ve had a big day, you’re tired and you can’t wait to get to bed. You snuggle in at 9:30pm; take a few deep breaths and think “Ahhh…yes. Sleep time.” That is until you roll over (for what feels like the one hundredth time) and check the clock. 1:00am – eek!

Research says that getting adequate sleep is good for you for a number of reasons. Some of these reasons are:

  1. Your nervous system: It improves concentration, mood and memory
  2. Your Immune System: When your immune system is well rested, it can defend your body easier and more effectively
  3. Your Cardio Vascular System: Getting adequate sleep may help to reduce heart rate variability and
  4. It’s good for over all body rest & rejuvenation

So, as you can tell from this simple overview, Sleep is pretty important for your health and wellbeing. Here are my top five sleep well (or get back to sleep) tips:

  1. Routine
Creating a routine around bedtime for yourself teaches your body when you’re nearing sleep time. The best way to do this is to think about children and the way we teach them with a routine that it’s almost bedtime. Find a series of things to do that works for you as a bedtime routine and stick with it.
  2. Deep Breathing
This one is obvious and we hear it all the time. That’s because it works. Try taking a deep breath in through the nose and out through the mouth. Do this a number of times to calm your nervous system.
  3. Aromatherapy
Lavender is a lovely essential oil to use for this exact purpose. Be careful with this one though because too much lavender can actually have the opposite effect. Remember: a little to calm, a lot toenergise. Here’s where I get most of my essences and essential oils from: http://www.spiritoflightessences.com
  4. Meditation
This one is important because often the reason we are unable to get back to sleep is that we have all these thoughts running through our mind. Meditation can help us to control our thoughts rather than letting them run away with us and the right ones can also teach us to simply let those thoughts come and go rather than lingering in the first place.try this one: getsomeheadspace.com
  5. No Electricals
Yep. That’s no phone, no T.V. and no computer games in the bedroom. This feeds into the routine factor. If your body is used to watching TV in bed, then you cannot expect that it will want to sleep there if you’ve spent all evening teaching it that it’s actually for being wide awake not sleeping. If you must have your phone in the bedroom at night (many people use it as an alarm clock) then put it on to airplane mode to stop the electrical signals from interfering with the electrical signals going on in your body.

The long-term effects of a lack of sleep can have dramatic effects on the body so if you’re not sleeping as well as you would like to be, then give one of the above tips a try – your body will thank you for it.

Monday Mantra:: Everything Is Wow!

Monday-Mantra-Wow

Today’s monday mantra is courtesy of a 18 month old boy. We babysat him for the first time this weekend and his favourite word at the moment is ‘wow’.

Everything is wow to this young man. He sees the magic in everyday things. A bowl of pasta is “wow”, blinds on the windows are “wow”, the staircase is “wow” and even a book creates a resounding “wow”. It’s beautiful to watch the eyes light up and hear the exasperation and intensity of the wow at all of these seemingly average things.

This week, I challenge you to look at everyday items and situations through new eyes. With a sense of wonder, a sense of magic. Because we often forget that the simple things are often the things we take for granted.

When you catch the train to work this week, think wow.
When you eat your cheese toastie for lunch, think wow.
When you get back to your home, partner, children or pets, think wow.

The more you look for the wow, the more you find the wow, the more you’ll see and feel the wow.

As always, download the  image and save it to your phone or desktop or print it and pin it somewhere. When you see it, say it and if you think someone you know could use this mantra, share it.

Monday Mantra:: I Choose To See The Bigger Picture

Monday-Mantra-See-the-bigger-picture

I choose to see the bigger picture.

I choose to see the bigger picture because it gives me a chance to choose a happier thought. It gives me the option to look at all of the elements involved before getting upset or angry about something.

I chose this mantra today because I realised this morning that not everyone sees the bigger picture. Some people only see the details of the ‘right then and there’. There is of course no right or wrong way, it’s entirely up to the individual’s perspective but the difference it can make in how you feel and the thoughts you choose is pretty amazing.

What brought this up this morning was a minor thing. A simple “hey, you forgot to get this from the supermarket” kind of remark. But I found myself thinking “but wait, I did the groceries, chopped vegetables and cooked for 3 hours yesterday so you have dinners for the week while I’m working late and all you can see is that I forgot one thing from the supermarket?”.

Where in life are you prone to seeing only the one detail in front of you? Where could you benefit from taking note of the bigger picture? Ask yourself:

1. Am I looking at this as an individual comment, event, incident? or
2. Am I looking at this in its entire context or bigger picture?

Choosing to see things in their context can often result in less stress for both yourself and any other people involved.

I choose to see the bigger picture.

As always, download and save the image to your phone, desktop or print and pin it somewhere and when you see it, say it and If you think someone else you know might benefit from this mantra, share it.

Let’s get (Meta)Physical

Let's Get Metaphysical

In my sessions, I often explain things to my clients in terms of metaphysics. That is, the emotional reasons behind their physical symptoms. So many people come to me as a last resort and often they have neglected to look at the emotional component of what their body is telling them. Symptoms are your body’s way of talking to you. It’s always telling you something if you’re willing to listen.

I thought I’d share a few with you here today based on some of the most common one’s I’ve come across over the last few weeks. Please note that these are often different for everyone so try thinking outside the box, beyond these interpretations.

Stomach:

Who or what are you unable to stomach at the moment?
What is going on that you are unable to digest?
(New Information, study, emotionally charged situations)
Are you biting off more than you can chew?

Skin:

Fungal – what are you holding onto that is festering?
Pimples – anger, irritation, eruption of emotion
Who or what is getting under your skin?

Bladder:

Who are you pissed off at?
What are you releasing too quickly?
What are you holding on to too?

Knees:

How flexible are you being?
Who or what have you not forgiven?

Left Side of The Body: Yin / Internal (self, family, feelings, night-time etc)
Right Side of The Body: Yang / External (others, work, men, external influences, day time etc)
There are some great books out there about the metaphysical components to physical complaints. I can recommend:

Louise L Hay (You Can Heal Your Body)
Annette Noontil (Your Body is A Barometer of Your Soul)
Christiane Beerlandt (The Keys to Self Liberation)

Each has some interesting insights about specific ailments and their psychological origins. Remember that every person is different so you might find that one feels closer to the “real” explanation for you than the others.

I’ll post some more of my metaphysical awareness here over the next few weeks too.

When you’ve exhausted all other avenues to correct your health, it might be time to Get (meta)Physical.

Monday Mantra:: Silence Is Golden

I struggled to decide to put up as today’s Monday Mantra. To be honest, I had a few ideas but none o them really felt right today. I think that’s because sometimes, no words are better. We’ve gotten use to constantly listening to music, watching video’s, the TV and talking on the phone and that’s just in the commute, let alone at home or at work.

When you think about it, a comfortable silence between friends or lovers can be quite comforting. Sometimes that wave from across the street can feel better than a five-minute conversation and do you remember that feeling when you lock eyes with someone from across the room, you get that zing of attraction and it’s like the entire world around you fades into the background? So much better than words, right?!

So, this week, choose to see silence as golden. Take in the sights, aromas and feelings instead. See and feel how rich life can be without words. Immerse yourself in the silence – Silence is golden.

As always, save the full image to your phone home screen, your desktop or print it and pin it somewhere you’ll see it often. When you see it, say it. And if you think someone else would benefit from this mantra, share it.

Monday Mantra:: I Allow Myself to Receive

Monday-Mantra-Allow-Myself-to-Receive

Today’s mantra comes from an awareness that I came into this last week which has since become integral for a lot of my clients.

I Allow Myself to Receive

I came across an interview on the Super Soul Sunday with Debbie Ford. There were two lines in particular that piqued that awareness twinge. These two lines went something like:

  1. When I got your call, it wasn’t just a call, it was a higher call, you know?
  2. The greatest gift from this phase in my life is that I learnt how to receive love. For the first time, I really felt loved. I was afraid of being vulnerable. I was so busy giving, giving, giving and not receiving

Ordinarily these lines probably wouldn’t have had that same intensity of resonating with me but lately, I have been sensing that I have a bigger calling. I have also been doing a bit of work with the Law of Attraction. And I couldn’t work out what was holding me back with seeing results. That’s where the second line got me.

In the Law of Attraction, there is a law of allowing. That was my missing piece. I was creating, creating, creating and giving, giving, giving and not allowing myself to receive the results.

So my mantra since has been that I Allow Myself to Receive.

Last week, every single client I saw had this very same underlying key that was either holding them back, underpinning a pattern in their life or the turning point in their particular concern. It was key in areas of Money, Relationships and Weight Loss and Health (I’ll cover each them in more detail later in the week of how these patterns were playing out). Yes, there were other elements at play too however, this one line of allowing yourself to receive was present in each area.

Have a think about these in this order:

  1. Where in your life you do you not allow yourself to receive?
(where do you say “no” to an offer of help?, Where do you hold back in relationships?, Where do you feel comfortable? think about how well you receive compliments too – this is something that I am personally working on).
  2. What is the result of not allowing yourself to receive? How do you feel? What do you not have? What do you not see?
  3. What are all the benefits that would come about if you allowed yourself to receive?

Now, repeat, repeat, repeat: I Allow Myself to Receive

Repeat this over and over for a few weeks and start to notice how your interactions start to change, how opportunities start coming your way and how mostly how you start to feel like there’s more give than take in your world.

As always, save the image to your phone lock screen, desktop or print it and pin it somewhere you’ll see it. When you see it, say it and if you think that someone else you know could really use this mantra, share it.

Kinesiology Is Not A Magic Bullet

Apple Healthy Low ResKinesiology is not a magic bullet. Kinesiology requires you to look at yourself, your patterns, your thoughts, behaviours and your emotions. It’s not always easy but it is always worth it.

I have the benefit of working in both a specialist kinesiology centre as well as a multidisciplinary clinic. Here’s what I have noticed.

People are typically looking for a quick fix so when they’re presented with a quick fix versus a you need to do a lot of work to get what you want approach, more often than not, the quick fix wins. Can’t blame them there, really – It would be great if these worked all the time with permanent results.

There are remarkably more cancellations at the multidisciplinary clinic. I believe that this is two-fold.

  1. The quick fix is usually a quick appointment time (15-20 minutes) so the perceived value of that practitioners time is typically diminished and
  2. People tend to not value the quick fix in quite the same way as they do the long steady progress (sometimes this is conscious, sometimes subconsciously)

In the specialist clinic, people who come to see me make and keep their appointments, show up early for their sessions and are genuinely upset if they have to cancel. In fact, I once had a client offer to pay me double if I could stay behind and see them out of usual business hours. While that was not a service I could offer, it certainly was a clear sign of someone who knows the value of Kinesiology!

Now, think about how old you are.

It took you that many years to learn some of your habits, your ways of doing things, your ways of survival.

How long do you think it takes to re-wire those learnings? Certainly not 20 minutes!

It’s not going to be a quick fix. And if it is, it won’t always be a lasting one.

That’s not to say that a quick fix won’t ever fix the concern at hand. Not at all. In fact, sometimes this is just what the body needs. I’m simply saying that sometimes your body and wellbeing deserve more than just a quick fix. It deserves to have you really think about the best approach to help it in the long-term, not just the short-term.

So next time you’re looking for a practitioner for a recurring injury, concern or issue think about how long you’ve had that concern for and then think about how long it will realistically take to rectify the situation and make an informed choice on how best to approach your wellbeing. It’s also important to remember that It’s absolutely okay too to blend approaches for the best benefit of your body. Use a mix of two or three different modalities to get the best results for you.

WHOLE-istic Wellness (Part 2)

Dana Atkin Kinesiology Wholistic Wellness

It always bugged me that I spelt holistic wrong. Every single time, I had to correct it. And now I know why. It’s because it should be Wholistic. Not Holistic. And since yesterdays post  I’ve been pondering this even further.

Here’s where my trail of thought is going at the moment.

The definitions of Holistic:

“Characterized by the belief that the parts of something are intimately interconnected and explicable only by reference to the whole.”

The medical definition of Holistic:

“Characterized by the treatment of the whole person, taking into account mental and social factors, rather than just the symptoms of a disease.”

Then why, is spelt as if there is a hole in the person? We are after all whole beings.
Hole-istic wellness suggests that somewhere within us is a hole. Always. So therefore, can there really be any true wellness if there is always something missing?
Whole-istic wellness would suggest that at all times, we are whole beings and that parts of the whole are not as well as they could be. Far more likely that wholistic wellness is to be aimed for, that feeling of completion, that feeling that every part of your being is connected, is whole. There is certainly nothing missing because as a Kinesiologist, I understand that our bodies know exactly what we need in order to achieve optimal health and wellbeing.
That is, wellness beyond symptoms, beyond the physical, beyond the nutritional and chemical, beyond the mental, emotional components but deep in to the cellular level and much further out and more expansive that the body far beyond the spiritual essence of our being. We’re more wholistic than we intellectually think we are.
What are your thoughts on holistic or wholistic wellness?
