Journey of a Modern Mystic: A Life Long Practice

As with any adventure you embark on, as the adventure unfolds, you tend feel like nothing has changed because day to day, the shifts aren’t always obvious. Yet, often when we look back at who we were, where we were when we began, we can see the difference and the changes that have taken place. It’s a real before and after that is quantifiable, tangible. that can’t always be seen while we’re in it.

My journey through the School of the Modern Mystic has been subtle in many ways, especially with the day to day working on and working in the material but when I look back at who I was before hand, how I felt before hand I can see and feel that I am very different than I was before.

While many things have shifted, I feel perhaps the biggest gift this beautiful school has given me is the gift of knowing what my own energy feels like.

Before this training, I felt tired, unwell and agitated about so many things. Now, when I am continuing these practices, I find that I have more energy, when I’m unwell I am not unwell for long and while I find myself getting agitated here and there, I know I only need to return to my practices to feel a sense of stillness again. I know that these practices are integral for my wellbeing, for my self-esteem, for my life to feel smooth and life’s challenges something that can be overcome.

I am human of course and I often fall off of my Modern Mystic Wagon but the support from my fellow Modern Mytsics is always there to help get me back on track. It is after all, a spiritual practice.

Without these practices, I know that I am a short fused, illness prone, tired, grumpy person. With them, I am energetic, I am still, I am comfortable in who I am and I make smart choices without really needing to work through them. They just seem to be easy to make.

If I get my energy field right, everything else just works. And I can tell you that fist hand. I’ve loved it so much i’ve begun level 2 to deepen the work of level 1.

Purpose & Pursuit: Hold Still & Allow It

Cape Otway Lighthouse trail

On honeymoon recently, we stopped in to check out the lighthouse at Cape Otway. At first, it was any lighthouse attraction. Then, as the time went past, I realised there was more going on there from an energetic perspective (predominantly for myself) but there was also a lesson there that I’d like to share with you.

This tourist attraction had a small “park like” attraction set. A walk where you could find information on the area and it’s uses over the years. These included a Dinosaur hut with information on dinosaurs in Australia. A signalling station where the first telegraph line was set up between the mainland and Tasmania, a little mystery with a missing pilot who disappeared after reporting an craft that was “not an aircraft” hovering above him. A lighthouse, a cafe (with surprisingly good coffee) and a world war two radar dugout.

To set this up, I need to also explain that I somehow felt connected here. I saw trees along the way that were “dead” to the naked eye yet alive with energy. I somehow felt like I was meant to be there. As this post continues, I’ve put words in italics where there was a deeper message for me in this tourist attraction.

The dinosaurs at the time, was not my thing. I realise now that this was a little more meaningful symbolically as “Ancient” or “Primal“.

The signal station immediately had me guarding my energy without me even consciously thinking about it – I was just doing it. And the sound of morse code ticking in the background creeped me out. The signal somehow was instilling fear. In one of the rooms there was a piece on a young girl that jumped out at me and then in one of the rooms that smelt intensely of Frankincense, I could sense a woman in the spirit world, sitting in the corner sipping her tea. It was like me knowing she was there was our little secret. An interesting interaction.

Then came the information piece about the missing pilot who disappeared under mysterious circumstances. The mystery and the unknown.

Next was the light house. It was still in it’s raw way. The way it was built. Nothing fancy added other than a lick of paint or two. It was what it was. It still is what it is. It’s a lighthouse. It hasn’t become anything else to please the tourists who visit there daily, it has always been it’s self and there to full fill it’s purpose. To light the shore, to guide the ships that pass by.  Hold still at your core and you become a beacon for guidance to find you.

Now the dug out. While it seems to be all about war, for me it was about the word ‘radar’. A way of being in tune with what surrounds us. And the viewing lens was a reminder that perspective is always key. That by focusing on where we’re at right now doesn’t mean that all our wants and desires are not there, in fact, they are there, we just need to look further, look deeper, within, not outside of ourselves.

Then on the final little trial back to the beginning, was a spot that beckoned me to take a photo (which I’ve included above). It just felt magical, like a fairy garden. This was all about following the impulses of intuition.

Ultimately, this expedition was a lesson in mindfulness (which is perfect timing for my SoMM learnings). It was all about being where you are, being present and mindful and knowing that when you’re in that space, all mysteries open up to us and we can be more accurately guided and therefore in a better, more “still” position in which to hear that guidance and take inspired action when it calls.

If you want to know more about SoMM I’ll be posting some more insights soon. If your interest is already piqued then you can sign up here to be notified when enrolment opens in 2016:

Authenticity

I saw a drawing on the pavement on the way to work yesterday. It was beautiful on so many levels. It was in bright coloured chalk across a long section of footpath. It had clearly defined start and end lines and was filled with rainbows, sunshine and smiley faces and flowers. And at each beginning line were the words: When you walk here, you DANCE!

It was kinda liberating. It was in sync with some Chakra work i’ve been immersing myself in for the 2nd Chakra which is all about joy, desire and being creative and uninhibited. What a perfect reminder it was!

It so common that we hide ourselves. We stuff ourselves, our true selves, deep down into our body and psyche for fear of what others may think. We become the person we think they want us to be. We become the person we think will be “successful”. We become the person we think will be liked, adored, loved and respected.

Then, one day we awaken miserable and we don’t know why. Life has lost it’s shine and sparkle and the thought of getting up and going out into the world as this “person” just feels too heavy.

It’s then we seek out advice, we seek a solution to the mundane day-to-day existence. It’s then we go searching. And yet, often it seems that we come face to face with who we’ve become, not who we really are. And so what we really go searching for is ourselves. Often, we’ve had it all along but we’ve painted over our true selves and all it takes is a little unravelling. Yes, sometimes there are more pieces to collect of who we are but ultimately, at our very core, we’ve had us all along.

Perhaps it’s time to remove the layers of conformity and peel back the masks we’ve created and discover once again our authentic selves. Who cares what people think when you dance down the street? Or when you’re 35 and you’re jumping in puddles for the sheer fun of it? Who cares if you’re an adult skipping around the park instead of running? (Skipping by the way is the quickest way I know to get happy – it’s impossible to skip around and not get deliriously happy and giggly).

Often the things, the people, the places that make us deliriously happy, connect us back into who we really are.

What are you going to do today to connect back into Joy and back into your authentic self?

When There’s Nothing You Can Do To Help

Angels intercede Dana Atkin Kinesiology

I often have clients come in with this exact issue. They come in and they’re in a situation where they can’t help, or have no choice in the circumstances, or it’s out of their control.

Some things in life are inevitable. Some people just want to run their own course and won’t hear anything anyone has to say. Some people will only ever take the advice of one trusted source and are deaf to any other ideas.

It can be hard to watch someone go through life changing processes and situations especially when they’re not open to hearing new ways of dealing
with the issues at hand or are adamant that they don’t need help. Beyond being an open heart and ear to listen as they need it, what else can you do to help?

Here’s what I do. I ask the angels to talk to them, to give them guidance and clear signs to the right path that will help through the space they’re in so that they can come out the other side in the best way and shape possible for their highest good.

This works because you feel like you’re helping and you get to do this anonymously without putting your open talks at risk. You get to still be there to listen as a non-judgemental ally, not someone who is telling them how they should be doing things which people get plenty of already. You know that however they choose to get through this phase, it is in their highest good, because that’s what you’ve asked for (sometimes, people need to take the toughest road through these situations because there’s a golden lesson in it for them that will be truly life changing in a positive way).

So next time you feel like there’s nothing you can do to help, ask the angels to intercede on your behalf and allow them to weave their magic.

In pursuit of extraordinary

ExtraOrdinary Dana Atkin Kinesiology

Funny how when we imagine it all coming together that we imagine the results being extraordinary. Not okay, not great, extraordinary.

And then we pursue extraordinary. we pursue it like it’s our destiny, like it’s meant to be. We were always destined for greatness.

When we fall short of our perceived greatness, we’re hard on ourselves, we throw in the towel or we think we have to go back to square one and begin again.

Here’s the thing. What if our perception of extraordinary is not quite right? What if extraordinary is extraordinary? What if the real magic, the real greatness lies in the everyday, ordinary tasks? Doing the dishes, hanging out the washing, and going to the gym?

What if our greatness is determined by our day to day rituals? Who’s to say that this is not the extraordinary we crave? Because often our version of extraordinary includes circumstances outside of ourselves when really the feeling we seek of being  extraordinary can only really be found inside.

So when you look to external things, like being a famous writer, a famous chef, or amazing actor, remember that these in them selves are ordinary. You are already extraordinary and these labels, these passions, these things, all exist outside of yourself. It is you adds the extraordinary to them.

The Unplug Initiative

Plug back in to you Dana Atkin Kinesiology

I’ve decided that now is the time to unplug.

While the universe has certainly given me some unplugging it’s self (jobs, places and people), I think – no – I FEEL like it’s time for some unplugging initiative.

I’m going to begin with a Facebook Fast. This by far is my biggest rival for my attention. I tend to use it when I know I should be concentrating on myself. I look to others lives, to more ads about more external influences about how to better myself and my business and I look for the sake of looking when really I need to look within and cultivate my own energy.

When I plug into everything else outside of me, I leave no energy or attention for me or my spirit and wonder why I feel so low.

So, I’ll begin with seven days away from my number one distractor. I shall take on a Facebook Fast for seven days to see how well I can plug back into my own being, into my own life and to feel what changes take place within.

What do you need a detox from? What would plugging back into you and your real life look like? How would it change you?

What Might It Mean? :: Laces Coming Undone

Laces coming undone meaning

Laces keep coming undone on your Right Shoe, for no particular reason?

Have you considered that they may be trying to tell you something about your thoughts and emotions?

Think about where you are considering “stepping out” or “moving forward” in life and then think about where the fear is – where are you worried that you might “come undone”?.

Now, what can you do to mitigate that risk?
What will make you feel secure in moving forward with that idea?

Why you need to trust your instincts when looking for a health practitioner

I’ve come across a few lovely clients who have quite literally been put through the ringer by some people who have posed themselves as the be all and end all in the health and wellness world. Being confident in your profession is one thing, but arrogance and disregard for the health and wellbeing of others who put their trust in you is quite another. It’s incredibly frustrating that there are practitioners out there that call themselves “healers” but put clients in a holding pattern of fear (which by the way is often an emotional precursor to all the reasons that people go to see practitioners for in the first place). These clients are now at a point that they don’t know who to trust anymore. They’ve even gone against their own instincts so they’re not sure they can even trust themselves.

A practitioner who claims to be the “be all and end all” in their profession is troublesome for a number of reasons.

Firstly, there is no singular remedy, modality or practitioner who can be the answer to all of your concerns and in fact, it very often takes a complimentary, team approach. What works for me, may not work for you. We are indeed all individuals and what makes us unique also means that we each require a unique remedy. (I personally have a Remedial Massage Therapist, a Kinesiologist and a Chiropractor as my basic life/health care team. I then add and remove as required in order to be in the best possible shape for myself and my clients. This includes Doctors, Dentists, Acupuncturists etc – there is a place for each of these for me).

Secondly, if we presume to be the only person who can help someone, then we inadvertently hurt them by possibly holding them back from another practitioner who may have the last piece, or indeed the right piece of the puzzle for them. It is irresponsible. We are all human and we are all susceptible to life’s stresses so we cannot ever proclaim to be the master of any one way of being other than being human. That said, if we are not willing to do the work we set for our clients, then we are certainly in no position to ask them to do what we ask. Walking the walk, not just talking the talk. (I personally see a kinesiologist once per month, every month to work on my ‘stuff’).

This point also cultivates fear in the client as well as the practitioner. It is unfair to inflict fear upon anyone who is seeking assistance from us. It sets the client back, the client and the practitioner both begin to act out of fear. What we infuse often breeds somewhere within us. It is far better that a client receives the results they’re looking for and experience beyond their expectations – that, my fellow practitioners is how you create word of mouth. There is only an abundance of people you can assist so why only help one or two when you could help so many more? A client should never be only “yours”.

As a client, if you feel uneasy, unsure or if something just doesn’t feel right about the practitioner, the modality or the results you are getting (or not getting) you have every right to:

1. Ask your practitioner about any concerns you have around the results.
2. Walk away at any given point (note: some practitioners, such as kinesiologists, will only allow you leave mid-session if you are in a safe, healthy, calm state of mind to do so, it is our duty of care)
3. Not continue with your initial session if, once you’ve had the process explained to you, you’ve changed your mind.
4. To ask questions throughout all sessions if you don’t understand what is being said to you. (note: all good practitioners will only be too happy to explain things to you – we love sharing our passion)

This goes for practitioners and clients alike. Above all, trust your instincts and your own opinions. Never let someone else’s opinion overshadow your own. You know your body better than anyone else, your body knows what it needs to heal it’s self and it will either give you clear signs to steer away or it will give you clear signs that you’re on the right path. Trust your instincts, listen to you.

Night Light

A flash of inspiration came over me just now. It is called Night Light. Remember being scared of the dark as a child? or perhaps (as it is for many) being scared of the dark now? Remember how having a night light on, always made the night more bearable? So I was lamenting how I receive a regular email at night (I presume because of the Australian time zone) and how it actually makes me feel calmer going to bed because I have this positive, calming note that I read right before bed. Then it occurred to me that perhaps some other people could with this proverbial night light too. Something to get them to sleep, something to put their mind at ease to get them through the night (both actual and proverbial). Watch this space over the next few days and weeks as I put together some Night Light thoughts and begin sending them out into the wide world. Let’s begin with this one. Night Light:: I know as I fall asleep tonight, that a beautiful new, happier, brighter day filled with great opportunities is lining up for me.   If you’re interested, the nightly emails I refer to above, they are called Notes From The Universe. You can sign up for them here (I personally love them).

Monday Mantra:: I Choose to Listen to My Inner Voice

Monday Mantra I Choose To Listen to my inner voice

This one is not an easy one for some. It’s not even an easy one for those who are well versed in listening to their inner voice. We tend to get off track and follow what others think and profess to be the “truth” or fact or the best way forward.

When comes to our inner voice (i.e.; Intuition, Inner Guide or Higher Self, Gut Instinct etc) we tend to allow other people to override it with their opinions because we worry that we might be wrong, that might be perceived as being “away with the fairies” or that because there seems to be no logic to it, we haven’t agonised over the decision enough, that the answer cannot be that simple.

The thing is that the more we trust and follow this inner voice, the more it will guide us.

I come across so many people who are easily swayed by the opinions of those around them. I am also quick to get my clients to tap into what works for them, not what I think they should be doing or what is right for them. The only person who knows what is right for them is themselves. The only person who knows what’s right for you, is you.

So the next time you feel like you’re being pulled in many directions by the opinions of others, consider getting in touch with your Inner Voice and see what the best answer for you really is. Sit still, in a quiet space with your eyes closed, take a few deep breaths in and out and ask for guidance on the best way forward. It may come as a feeling, it may come as an instant thought of the best way forward or it may come later in the day or week as a series of signs (words, numbers, themes of conversation, “coincidences” etc).

Choose to listen to your inner voice.

As always, download and save this Monday Mantra Image to your desktop or phone or print it and pin it somewhere you’ll see it. When you see it, say it. And if you know someone who would also benefit from this mantra, please share it.
